A way to envision Dr. Kalam's Dream of India 2020

Democracy is the buzz word for our political system. But is it really so? Are we really satisfied with the way our country is being governed? Why is it so that people below 50 years are considered as political ‘kids’?

The country desperately needs some young leaders who personify energy, enthusiasm, morality, and diligence. No doubt we have progressed a lot in the last 62 years but the development pace would have been completely different if we had some young torchbearers led this process of development.

At the time of independence, Gandhi called upon the youth to participate actively in the freedom movement. Young leaders likes Nehru came to his reckoning and led the movement. But this is not the case now. Nowadays we have only a handful of young leaders.

There can be two reasons for this current scene of Indian politics. One may be that the youth today are not interested in actively participating in the political field. They are content with what they are doing and how the country is being governed. The youth of modern India are aware of the problems facing by our own country.

Second reason may be that young people are not given opportunities to prove themselves claiming that they are not equipped to participate actively in the governance of the country. This reason seems to be more logical because of the monopoly of old leaders in almost all the major political parties of the country. Old people should realize that proper development can take place only when they make way for younger generations to take control of the activities. Given a chance they would be ready to change the political condition of the country for better.

The policy that I feel that the Indian Government should implement in 2016 is bringing in the “Indian Youth parliament.

Reasons:

Indian youth parliament is basically a concept which is stolen from the European youth parliament. I personally feel that the Indian government should copy this policy shamelessly. We only have the concept of Youth parliament competitions nationwide in many universities and colleges. There is also THE YOUTH PARLIAMENT FOUNDATION which is a charitable trust running with the concern of developing young minds of India. So, it is a high time that India should bring in youth parliament as a Government policy. The reason behind I am being so insistent about bringing in youth parliament is that it is one guaranteed way through which our nation can build the power of the youth.

“We cannot always build the future for our youth,
But we can build our youth for the future”
-Franklin D. Roosevelt

A latest UN report said With 356 million 10-24 year-olds, India has the world's largest youth population despite having a smaller population than China” Thus by 2020, India is set to become the world’s youngest country with 64 per cent of its population in the working age group. So it is the government’s responsibility to guide its youth force in the right direction that would turn its country around in all segments.

India is a country which is known for its diversity in culture, language and tradition. Establishing a youth parliament in India will help Indian youth to increase the awareness about politics and citizenship among them. It also creates a great vision for politics in the future. These young minds will bring innovative ideas and thus help in formulating new policies for the development of the nation.

Through this Youth parliament we must encourage the concept of independent thinking, willing youth can become volunteers of this organisation and provide platforms for Political debate, civic education and ethical leadership. This will contribute towards unity among the youth and bridge the cultural gaps between them.

There are millions of youth in our nation who are dedicated and willing to work for the development. This will be a great opportunity for youth like them to widen their knowledge in various areas, repay their nation by building a great future and setting a platform for future generations.

Through this policy we can motivate young minds to get involved in politics and change the negative perspective of the word Politics in India. There is a common phrase in India i.e. “Politics is nothing but full of garbage” the idea of bringing in youth parliament would change perspective and prove that we have young citizens who are ready to clean the garbage and make the political environment clean in India.

By implementing this policy we can educate young minds about politics and create a vibrant political environment in India which will help the growth of the country in the future making India a supreme power. This being the title for which India is fighting so long and this policy would help India achieve it.

Jai Hind.
